Sheridan AAA shows signs of late surge
By Rob Patrick
The Sheridan AAA American Legion team, after a season of ups and downs, appear to be pulling it together at just the right time.
Going into their doubleheader with Maumelle on Sunday, July 8, the Yellowjackets sported a lackluster 11-13 record. Since then, however, they've won five of six with a vital final week ahead of them.
At 4-5 in Zone 4, Sheridan still has a chance to finish as high as second in the league, or as low as sixth or seventh. Sheridan was to visit Texarkana on Monday, July 16 then host top-ranked Bryant for a doubleheader on Tuesday. After a non-zone game against Little Rock Oxford Printing on Wednesday, a twinbill against Bauxite on Friday completed the league schedule.
Sheridan will host the Zone 4 District Tournament beginning Thursday, July 26.
The Jackets swept Maumelle 13-0 and 8-0. On Monday at Pine Bluff, which leads the zone standings, they suffered a 14-3 loss in a game that was close most of the way. They came back Tuesday to shut out Vilonia 8-0 then swept a league twinbill against Arkansas Trailer, 4-3 and 10-1.
"We've been pitching real well," noted Sheridan head coach Mike Moore. "We've been playing good defense but we're still not hitting the way I'd like us to."
Against Arkansas Trailer, however, some late-game heroics in the first game helped vault Sheridan to a pair of wins.
